Lavender Crafts and Camaraderie

Jan, our gracious hostess for the July meeting of our Saucy Sisters cooking group, has a beautiful home with lots of lavender beds. She orchestrated a Day of Lavender for us that included lavender crafts and some lavender infused food.

While we enjoyed our refreshments, Jan explained the craft we were going to make — lavender wands. The finished product she showed us looked and smelled amazing.

Making Our Lavender Wands

We had been told via email to bring pruning shears to the meeting. Once we were finished with our coffee and scones, we headed out into the gardens with our shears to cut lavender for our wands — 11 stems. You can use more than 11 stems as long as you use an uneven number.

Cutting the lavender for our day of lavender crafts and camaraderieJan had a basket filled with satin ribbon in almost every color, including several shades of lavender and purple, for wrapping our wands. We cut off one yard but, for some, that wasn’t enough so I recommend two yards. It’s much easier to cut some off than tie in and add more.

This part is pretty crucial to getting a nice looking wand. They need to be bent over at the same spot and evenly spaced. This seemed to be the challenging part for several participants.

Once we had our cage around the flower heads, we began weaving the ribbon over and under each stem. Everyone was really concentrating on their technique.

I was pretty pleased with the way mine turned out.
