15 Best Things to do on South Padre Island

South Padre Island is a Senior-Friendly Gulf Coast Escape

I’ve been to a lot of places in the Rio Grande Valley, but South Padre Island holds a special place in my heart. Being a former southern California girl, I love being near the water. The sound of the waves crashing on the shore and the gentle sea breeze instantly make you feel relaxed yet energized. I’m lucky to live only about an hour from South Padre Island. I’ve visited many times so I can give you some first hand recommendations for things to see and do.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet retreat or a bit of adventure, South Padre has something for everyone—especially for active seniors like us.

My Experiences on South Padre Island

On my very first visit, I was struck by how vibrant and welcoming the island felt. The beaches were pristine, the air smelled of salt and sunshine, and it seemed like everyone had a smile on their face. It reminded me so much of some of the little beach towns in southern California oh so many years ago.

The pace of life here is just perfect—not too slow, not too hectic. It’s easy to see why so many people, especially snowbirds, make this their go-to getaway.

Best Times to Visit

Visiting in the fall or spring is ideal. The weather is mild, the crowds are smaller, and everything feels a little more relaxed. Winter is also a fantastic option if you’re looking to escape colder climates—it’s when the island welcomes its “Winter Texans” in full force. Summer can be a little brutal. The humidity is high, which I still have not gotten used to. But if you are here for the beach, it’s always a little cooler there with a bit of a breeze. And you can always cool off in the water!

Getting Around South Padre Island

One of the things I appreciated about South Padre is how easy it is to get around. Most spots are within walking distance, but if you’d rather ride, you can rent a golf cart or hop on the Island Metro (a free shuttle service!). For those with mobility concerns, there are plenty of ramps and even beach wheelchairs available.

Where to Eat and Drink

Just like trying a new adventure during each visit, I also like to try new places to eat. When it comes to food and drink, South Padre Island has plenty of fantastic options. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Sea Ranch Restaurant: Their fresh seafood is a standout. I highly recommend the blackened red snapper—it’s cooked to perfection. Pair it with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc for the ultimate coastal dining experience. I’ve eaten here a couple of times and it is definitely on my list of top places on the island.

  • F&B SPI: F&B is a relatively new restaurant on the island. Because of its great reviews, I decided to have a birthday dinner there and I thoroughly enjoyed my venison. The owners say they “offer a culinary sophistication blended with a nod to the island lifestyle.”

  • Louie’s Backyard: Louie’s Backyard is a waterfront restaurant on South Padre Island that offers a relaxed, yet refined dining experience. Their menu features fresh, locally sourced seafood and inventive coastal dishes that perfectly capture the island’s laid-back vibe. It’s also a favorite place to watch the weekly fireworks during the summer.
  • Clayton’s Beach Bar & Grill: Known as the “biggest beach bar in Texas,” this is a great spot to sip on a refreshing frozen margarita or enjoy a cold beer while soaking in the ocean views.

  • Lobo del Mar Cafe: Whether you are here for a meal, cocktails, entertainment or the view, you won’t be disappointed.

Here’s a couple of places I haven’t been but are highly recommended by those who have:

  • Gabriella’s Italian Grill & Pizzeria: After a day of exploring, their comforting Italian dishes hit the spot. They also have a good selection of wines to complement your meal.
  • Yummies Bistro: This charming breakfast and brunch spot offers hearty meals and great coffee. It’s perhaps the perfect start to a day of adventure.

Where to Stay

Accommodations on South Padre Island range from large resort hotels to intimate B&B options. Many are on, or have a view of, the water. Because it is so easy to get around the island, almost no matter where you stay, you’ll have lots to do in walking distance. If you’re traveling in an RV, I’ve heard great things about the KOA Holiday RV Park, which has beautiful waterfront spots.

Insider Tips

  • If you’re visiting in the summer, head out early to beat the heat and the crowds.
  • Keep an eye out for senior discounts at attractions like Sea Turtle, Inc.
